Available position 224G0004: Software Engineer

We are looking for a Software Engineer to join the Data and Software Team which is part of the much larger High Energy Optics team (HEO) at cosine innovations in Sassenheim, The Netherlands.

cosine’s High Energy Optics Team develops and produces innovative X-ray optics based on its Silicon Pore Optics technology. These optics are designed for use in future telescopes dedicated to astrophysical missions, such as the Athena telescope of the European Space Agency (ESA), which, when launched, will be the largest X-ray telescope ever flown. Silicon Pore Optics can also be used in ground-based applications ranging from medical to material research and semiconductor fields.

As a Software Engineer in the Data and Software Team you will develop database and data pipeline tools for the entire HEO team. These tools process data produced in the technical facilities used for the production of the optics. This data includes the processing of optical components, results of various experiments and inspections, and environmental datasets. These tools help fellow software and scientist-engineers to gain insight in the experiments done and the data that they collect.

While we are looking for a team member with a software background, it is important to note that at cosine we diverge from traditional software development structures. Our approach does not adhere to a predefined software methodology; instead, we embrace a flexible and agile working environment, particularly due to the experimental nature of our work and our close collaboration with scientists and engineers. This means that you will be working on various facets of software engineering, ranging from front-end and back-end development to handling API’s, databases, testing, and software pipelines — all within the context of scientific applications.

Since most of our scientists are engaged in research and development, your challenge will be to mix your passion for software engineering with your enthusiasm for the space industry, since you play a dynamic role in contributing to the high-energy optics for the Athena space telescope. cosine allows you to learn about the science, physics, and engineering behind the software, enabling you to learn about the bigger perspective of the project. You will join a flexible and agile software team consisting of both software engineers and scientists, defying traditional software structures where you will have a lot of control and freedom in your day-to-day tasks.

You will work in an international team of scientists, engineers and technicians who speak both Dutch and English. Our common language is English and all our documentation is also in English. In order to be successful in this position you have an analytic and problem solving mentality, are proactive and like to work in a team where you can propose ways to improve quality and efficiency. Your attention to detail allows you to identify, analyze and also test software of other team members.

cosine is a Dutch company that celebrated its 25th anniversary last year.  We have subsidiaries in Germany and Italy, and access facilities across Europe, to develop and build optical measurement systems for space, air and ground use. Our modern head office houses apart from nice offices, extensive technical facilities such as cleanrooms, vacuum equipment, optical laboratories and assembly, testing and calibration facilities. We are located on a small but high end business park within driving distance of Leiden, which is home of the oldest university of The Netherlands.
