How we produce the largest X-ray lens in the world

cosine develops Silicon Pore Optics (SPO), a novel form of x-ray optics, for the European Space Agency (ESA) and its flagship mission Athena. SPO mirror modules, made of silicon wafers, are the building blocks for Athena’s modular optics and will enable the production of the largest X-ray telescope ever flown.

We recently uploaded an updated video to our cosine YouTube channel, showing an animation of every aspect of the development and production of the SPO mirror modules. From the production of silicon plates to mirror module assembly and integration into the final 2.5 m diameter optical mirror.

More information about the Athena telescope can be found on our cosine website, the Athena science community website and ESA’s website.
